Think about it! What's something that you do all day, every day, no matter where you are or who you're with? (a) think about what's for lunch tomorrow (b) put your finger in your nose (c) hum your favorite song (d) breathe
2
What is the Respiratory System?
I will know that the respiratory system is made up of the lungs and other structures and that blood moves oxygen through the body.
3
The Respiratory System
Air in through nose and mouth Inhale= diaphragm moves down, rib cage moves up and out Lungs- exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide for air Exhale= diaphragm and ribs relax, move up, push air out
4
Think about it! Why do you think that is?
You have two lungs, but they aren't the same size the way your eyes or nostrils are. Instead, the lung on the left side of your body is a bit smaller than the lung on the right. Why do you think that is?
5
QUESTIONS WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR DIAPHRAGM, RIB CAGE, AND LUNGS WHEN YOU EXHALE? The diaphragm and rib muscles relax, move up, and push air out of the lungs. Then the rib cage is drawn in. What would happen if the diaphragm were paralyzed? Air would not be forces out of the lungs and you wouldn’t be able to breathe.
6
If a soccer player is out of breath, what should they do? Why?

Parts of the Respiratory System
Air enters through nose and mouth Nasal cavities warm and moisten air Larynx = vocal cords Trachea = tube to the lungs Branch off at bronchi Small tubes called bronchioles Ends in tiny air sacs that exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide
8
CO2 Blood from Body to Lungs O2 Blood Out from Lungs to Body
Alveoli (Air Sacks): tiny sacks in lungs are surrounded by capillaries (oxygen enters bloodstream and carbon dioxide exits). Mouth CO2 Blood from Body to Lungs O2 Blood Out from Lungs to Body O2 IN CO2 OUT Red Blood Cell Carbon Dioxide Molecule Oxygen Molecule
