Alkaline Earth Metals By: Aliyah Aguilar, Julia Alba, Phillip Tick and Luna Uribe

2 What are Alkaline Earth Metals?
Alkaline earth metals consist of any of the six elements, Beryllium, Magnesium, Calcium, Strontium, Barium, and Radium Alkaline earth metals are found in the crust of the earth, usually in rock structures They have high boiling and melting points

3 Characteristics Alkaline earth metals are silver and white in color
They are soft and light metals which let them become malleable The density is low in these metals Characteristics

4 Melting Points Beryllium: 1,287 Celsius Magnesium: 650 Calcium: 842
Strontium: 777 Barium: 727 Radium: 696 Beryllium:2,349 Fahrenheit Magnesium: 1,202 Calcium: 1,548 Strontium: 1,431 Barium: 1,341 Radium: 1,285 Melting Points

6 Unique features Alkaline Earth metals are not found freely in nature
They are distributed in rock structures They have two electrons in their outer shell The radium is formed by the decay of uranium The radium is radioactive, and dangerous to touch Magnesium and Calcium is very important to animal life Calcium builds strong bones and regulates the body's temperature

7 Insoluble- Impossible to dissolve
All of the alkaline earth metals are shimmery and silver They are are all flammable They are insoluble in water They have only two electrons in their outermost layer Similarities Insoluble- Impossible to dissolve

8 What are they used for ? The six elements are used to make batteries, flashbulbs, fireworks, fertilizers, and different kinds of metal alloys These metals are most useful when used in compounds More Examples of what they’re used for: Flares Airplanes Rockets Missiles

9 Interesting Facts Magnesium and Calcium are the most frequently found
They burn with various colored flame The name Alkaline Earths derives from the oxides of the elements Radium was discovered by scientists Marie and Pierre Curie Interesting Facts

10 Who Discovered The Element
They were discovered in the early 15th century by Sir Humphry Davy The compound magnesium sulfate was founded in 1618 in Epsom in England by a farmer In the Scottish village of Strontian, 1790, Strontium carbonate was discovered in minerals

11 Dangers and Precautions
Alkaline Metals are highly flammable with contact with water or moist air If it were inhaled it can cause severe injury or death The fire will produce corrosive or toxic gases Alkaline Metals are: Water- Reactive Pyrophoric

12 The End You thought!

13 Questions 1. What are two things that alkaline earth metals are used for? 2. What is one characteristic that alkaline earth metals have? 3. What is one of the dangers that the metals pose? 4. Where are the alkaline earth metals found?

14 4. In the earth’s crust/ in rock structures
Answers 1.Flares/ Airplanes/ Rockets/ Missiles/ Batteries/ Flashbulbs/ Fireworks/ Fertilizers 2.Are silver and white in color/ Are soft and light/ Their density is low 3.Highly flammable with contact with water or moist air/ If inhaled can cause severe injury or death/ Fire will produce corrosive or toxic gases 4.
