1 Do Now 1. What parts of your experiment do you think currently will be the biggest sources of error when you run your lab tomorrow?

2 Identify That Error!

3 Different Types of Error
There are two different types of errors that exist for any laboratory: Experimental Design – Error due the materials used, lab setup, and overall structure of the lab. Humans cannot cause this. Human Error – Error that is created due to mistakes made by us during the lab.

4 How to Fix Human Error No major changes to a procedure can correct for human error The only solution to fix human error is practice, practice, practice. The more times you run a lab, the better you get at running it.

5 How to Fix Experimental Design Error
You can fix experimental error by changing the procedure. To fix experimental error, you need to look at how the experiment is designed and determine how the structure can be changed.

6 Experimental Design Example
1. Procedure has you put hand over the top of a gas container and move it to the other container

7 Experimental Design Example
1. Procedure has you put hand over the top of a gas container and move it to the other container

8 Examination of Your Procedure
You are now going to modify the procedure that you made Monday/Tuesday and reviewed with Mr. Lance You are going to examine a similar procedure to the lab you made and make structural modifications based on this reading. Your final procedure will be due at the end of class

9 1 2 3 4 Compare Your Procedure to Book Pick experiment Research Topic Develop Procedure 8 5 7 6 Develop 3rd Procedure to Minimize Experimental Error Develop 2nd Procedure to Minimize Experimental Error Calculations and Analyze Data 1st Run Through of Lab 9 10 11 12 Write Discussion and Introduction Make Poster for Presentation! 2nd Run Through of Lab Calculations and Analyze 2nd Data

10 Procedure Work Time Fill out the similarities/differences handout
Develop new procedure that you will use tomorrow.

11 Formulating a Hypothesis
Before you leave today you must submit your hypothesis for the experiment. Recall, a hypothesis is an educated guess. You just need to be able to justify it and it must be testable Ex.: If the solution is darker, than this indicates that it is more concentrated. Ex.: If we mix sugar and water, than we will make a salt water solution.

13 Closing Time Make sure you are on track to finish the materials on time. Set up a time to come in if you are falling behind!
