Global toll of safety and health failures OHSAS – well used, but not an agreed international standard Alignment with other management standards and aids integration ISO looks at the interaction between an organisation and its business environment (i.e. H&S is part of an overall business mgt system).

14 ISO 45001:2018 Leadership Certain clauses require action by top management which may not be delegated to others. Developing, leading and promoting a culture…that supports the intended outcomes of the OHSMS. Removal of the ‘management representative’ – now undertaken by top management itself Documented evidence OH&S Policies, objectives are established (e.g. responsibilities, involved, engaged and accountable) Integration Resources are available OHSMS outcomes Consultation and participation processes (e.g. workers involved in decision making process) Continual improvement

15 ISO 45001:2018 Worker participation Two-way
Involve non-managerial personnel (or their reps) Removal of obstacles and barriers (e.g. ignoring worker input) Provision of resource - time, training and information Workers aware they can stop working with no fear of reprisal if a hazardous situation arises. Must establish processes for consultation (e.g. implies two-way comms so workers or their rep can provide feedback) Must establish processes for participation (e.g. implies the contribution of workers or their reps).

16 ISO 45001:2018 Risks and opportunities
Required to consider the context (4.1), the ‘relevant’ requirements of their interested parties (4.2) and the scope for their OHSMS (4.3) when determining risks and opportunities e.g. thinking about internal and external issues you may face and the impact it may have on systems and processes. For every external and internal issue/ need and expectation of interested parties – a risk source may be identified. Should be carried out at both strategic (‘others risks to OHSMS’ and ‘other opportunities to the OHSMS’ and operational levels (‘OH&S risks’ and ‘OH&S opportunities’). Remember ‘workplace’ definition. Be proportionate.
