1 Truman Orders Box 1 Box 2 In 1948 President Truman created an Executive Order that desegregated the military. All military forces were now integrated This was the first step in ending segregation. However, society was still divided. The bravery and skill seen in WWII led to this decision to intergrade

2 Affirmative Action, 1965 Box 1 President L.B. Johnson signed an Executive Order requiring employers to recruit minorities and women to correct the imbalance in their companies. Affirmative action programs were extended to higher education to increase minority representation Some critics saw this a reverse discrimination but the court case University of Cali vs. Bakke upheld affirmative action. Although, this has been phased out in most places, it helped create a more pluralistic society

3 King’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail
Box 1 Box 2 King believed in non-violence, he believed that if the government passed an unjust law, people should oppose it with non-violent tactics such as peaceful marches. He led a march through Birmingham, Alabama where he was arrested. Due to this Dr. King wrote a “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” explaining the reasons why African Americans could no longer patiently wait for their constitutional rights.

4 Civil Rights Act 1957 Eisenhower administration passed the civil right act to increase African American voting in the south. Act created commission and establish the civil rights In the act the federal courts had power to register African American voters registration procedures complex but help for later legislation

5 The march on Washington,1963
Dr.King and other civil rights leaders organized the march to pressure congress to pass the new civil rights bill   Ended with a special meeting between MLK Jr. and JKF at the white house.

6 The Montgomery bus boycott
Rosa parks, an African American seamstress and local NAACP member refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. When she was arrested, local African American leaders began a boycott of the bus. MLK was the leader of the boycott. The boycott lasted 13 months and brought Rosa Parks MLK and their cause to the attention of the world. The boycott showed that African Americans could unite and successfully oppose segregation.

7 Little rock Arkansas Governor Fabus wanted to prevent 9 African American kids from entering a high school. He had his army block the entrance of the school and wanted TO KEEP THE SCHOOL AN ALL WHITE SCHOOL This shows that little rock still believed in segregation. The conclusion was that president Eisenhower denied the request of idea of postponing the school to allow the little rock nine to enter and had the us troops protect them from mobs

8 Sit-ins and Freedom Rides in the south
African Americans sat-in at whites only lunch counter at Woolworth’s store in Greensboro, North Carolina This was copied through the South. In 1961, interracial groups rode buses in freedom rides in the south. As a result of these protests downtown stores finally agreed to desegregate lunch counters and hire African Americans. STUDENT NONVIOLENT CORDINATING COMMITTEE (SNCC) was formed. Leaders were Stockely Carmichael and Fannie Lou Hamer. THE CONGRESS ON RACIAL EQUALITY (CORE) was led by James farmer
