3 SAQ Questions Each question has 3 parts
Labeled “A,” “B,” and “C.” Can do the parts in any order you wish but CLEARLY label which section you are answering with the corresponding letter (A,B, or C). Part A will ALWAYS begin with “Identify…” Part B and C will ALWAYS begin with “Explain…” or “Describe…” If the prompt in Part A, B, or C says “reflected” or “shown” or similar wording in relation to the stimulus, YOUR ANSWER MUST REFER TO THE STIMULUS IN SOME WAY

4 SAQ Responses Part A – Identify = you must provide an example of whatever is asked by the question AND show why it is an appropriate example Identify ONE example of an agricultural product that was included in the Columbian Exchange ANSWER: An example of an agricultural product that was included in the Columbian Exchange was sugar. Sugar was part of the Columbian Exchange because it had been cultivate in areas of the Eastern Hemisphere, like Africa, and then transported to the New World to be grown on plantations to be sold as a cash crop.

5 SAQ Responses Part B and C
Explain – you need to show “why” something is the way it is. Usually means providing supporting evidence to support your assertion. Explain how the Columbian Exchange transformed societies in the Eastern Hemisphere. ANSWER: The Columbian Exchange brought about major changes in demographics in the Eastern Hemisphere. For example, in Western Europe the introduction of new crops, like the potato and corn, led to an increase in population in Western Europe. Also, the need for slave labor on the plantations of the New World caused an imbalance between genders as more African men were taken from Africa than African women. Describe – you need to show “how” something is the way it is. Usually means providing supporting evidence to support your assertion. Describe the effect of the Columbian Exchange on the Native American population. Answers: Due to the spread of diseases spread by the Columbian Exchange, such as smallpox and measles, much of the Native American population died. This meant that there were less people to resist European imperialism and the surviving Native Americans were often enslaved or exploited by European governments and settlers.
