Thank you for taking the time to meet with me today. I’m pleased to introduce our new AED, the Powerheart G5. In the following slides, I’ll walk you through issue (sudden cardiac arrest), the solution (defibrillation), and the features and benefits of our AED. 2. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)
SCA claims 400,000 lives per year in Europe, and often strikes without warning.1
Survival decreases by 10% per minute.2
Overall survival rate is 6%.3
First, let’s take a minute to understand the situation. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (or SCA) claims 400,000 lives in Europe each year. It often strikes without warning. It’s important to note that time is the critical factor with SCA: without proper therapy, survival rates decrease by 10% per minute. Overall, only 6% of victims survive SCA.

3. The Chain of Survival
Call emergency services and give CPR – but this is not enough!
Defibrillation is the only definitive treatment for SCA.
Defibrillation within three minutes of SCA can increase survival rates to 74%.1
Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) enable professionals and lay responders to provide immediate therapy.
The Chain of Survival represents a chain of actions that can lead to a greater opportunity for survival. “Early access” is a vital first step to ensure EMS services are deployed as quickly as possible. “Immediate CPR” (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) will keep oxygenated blood flowing to both the brain and heart, which buys time for the victim.
But while it is very important to call emergency services and give CPR, it is not enough. Defibrillation is the only definitive treatment for SCA, and defibrillation within three minutes of SCA can increase survival rates as high as 74%. AEDs (or automated external defibrillators) enable both professionals and lay responders to provide immediate therapy in an emergency.
The chain of survival is a well accepted process for treating
the sudden cardiac arrest patient. The chain consists of four distinct links
which if put in place at the onset of sudden cardiac arrest can give the
patient the best chance of survival¹

Here’s a poignant example of the importance of placing AEDs in public places. Kylee Shea was – to all appearances – a healthy 12-year-old girl. So everyone around her was stunned when Kylee collapsed at her school on October 12th from sudden cardiac arrest. Her teachers immediately responded with a Cardiac Science AED, which prompted them to provide a shock. Kylee responded to the second shock. She received an implantable defibrillator at the hospital, and returned to school within two weeks.
This entire episode was captured on her school’s video cameras. The U.S.-based Today Show interviewed Kylee and her rescuers and showed the video of her collapse. It’s important to note, her teachers mentioned that they hesitated (quite understandably) to push the button to deliver defibrillation shock. This is why we developed the fully-automatic AED, which I’ll describe to you in a few more slides.
