What tests are taken at each grade? Reading and Math – April 15-19 Writing - Feb. 26 Given on designated dates under standardized conditions Grade 3 Grade 4 Grade 5 ALL TESTS Reading and Science – April 15-19 Math – April 22-24

How is the FCAT Scored? Below grade level expectations (Minimum passing score for 3 rd grade Reading for promotion) Above Grade Level Expectations Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4 & 5 On Grade Level Scoring Scale for 2011-12 is changing – it will be more difficult to score a 3, 4, or 5 5 th Grade Reading & Math FCAT Scores are used by the middle schools for placement in Lang. Arts & Math courses.

FCAT Reading LITERARY ANAYLSIS (30%) VOCABULARY (20%) READING APPLICATION (30%) INFORMATIONAL TEXT (20%) Context Clues, Base Words, Antonyms, Synonyms, Multiple Meanings Character, Plot, Problem, Solution, Setting, Simile, Metaphor Authors Purpose, Main Idea, Contrast, Compare, Cause & Effect, Sequence Locate, interpret, organize information, text features 50-55 Items – Test Time 140 min. in 2 sessions

Read 20-30 minutes at a time, 5-7 times per week Variety of reading materials of interest Be a reading model and partner Do activities together that require reading Talk about things your child has read Read to older or younger siblings Technology options READING – outside of school

FCAT Math FRACTIONS (20%) OPERATIONS, PROBLEMS & STATISTICS (50%) GEOMETRY AND MEASUREMENT (30%) Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Estimation, Tables, Charts, Graphs Fractions, Mixed numbers, Comparing & ordering fractions Polygons, Reflections, Symmetry, Perimeter, Measurement (standard & metric), Time, Elapsed time Approximately 55 items – most Multiple Choice 4 th & 5 th grades add Gridded Response 140 minutes – 2 sessions

Talk about Science concepts being learned at school Help your child review for tests Encourage check-out of nonfiction, science-based library books Talk about science as it relates to nature, cooking, weather, animals Use Science words Observation Prediction hypothesis SCIENCE – outside of school

Learning – beyond the classroom Doesnt have to take a lot of time. Happens over time, often in small segments, with repetition. Is best when it is connected and with purpose. Thank you for coming tonight!
