1
Heat Week 4 Check for preliminary understanding of what heat is
2
What is Heat? HEAT- The movement of thermal energy from a space of high concentration to a low concentration TEMPERATURE- The measurement of heat Ask what happens when hot water is poured in cold water Ask boiling point and freezing point; difference between Fahrenheit and Celcius
3
Transferring Heat CONDUCTION- Transferring heat through direct contact
CONVECTION- Transferring heat through a fluid RADIATION- Transferring heat through electromagnetic waves Give examples of each (egg in hot water, heat rising in air, sunbeams on earth)
4
Establish that fluids are not limited to liquids (also gases)
5
Be more specific…? SPECIFIC HEAT- The amount of heat it takes to raise one gram of water by one degree Celsius ENTROPY- The tendency for energy to turn into heat Go over roughly (not specific); talk about how water is amazing because it can hold a lot of heat (why beach is cooler) Talk about burning wood; what is created and destroyed? (heat, light, etc)
6
Funky Heat gadgets THERMOMETER- A device used to measure heat
INSULATOR- Material that does not allow heat to move through it easily. Talk about boiling/freezing point, body temperature. Examples of insulators for heat (thermos, jacket) and cold (cooler, icebox)
