I have also just started grad school. Had an average of students come in each day. I wanted to “fix” it!! We now average about 187 students per day: not including the whole classes that come in,to use tables, labs & read

3 Stimulating Whimsical Exploratory Artistic Thinking
My makerspace started in a teeny tiny room. (Insert video tour of sweatshop room). I wanted to use a word that would catch the attention of students and make them say what is this about? Then I tried to come up with words that embodied the whole idea of creativity and learning. I started with craft items, white boards and a donated sewing machine. I’ve encouraged the kids to create like they do on Project Runway….sew with unconventional materials. I have added items as I could. We got a very small 3D printer and I am slowly adding tools and other craft materials. There is one large white board in the room for group collaboration and abouta dozen small white boards so that individuals can write and draw and rewrite plans for their ideas. Then I wanted to find a way for the kids to make it their room, so I let them paint all over the room. Inspiring quotes and pictures, they covered the walls! It gave them ownership of the room! The room was great, but our numbers were becoming so large that we couldn’t accomodate them in the sweat shop. We decided to completely re-imagine the library.
