3 Cultural Identity: Culture groups Local Diversity Ethnic groups
Few or many characteristics shared amongst a group (language and religion are the biggest factors) Sub-Culture: groups that share in some parts of culture but have their own distinctive values, norms, language, and/or material culture Example: Asian >>> ???? Local Diversity Ethnicity is an especially important cultural element We can suppress our ethnicity but cannot change it Most Americans have an extremely diluted ethnicities Ethnic groups Ethnocentrism: belief that one’s ethnicity is superior Hello, conflict. Ethnic groups are tied to a particular place! Most important factor of anything in culture!

4 Centripetal Force Brings people TOGETHER.
Centripetal Force is what holds you in when you are riding a roller coaster… it brings you close to the coaster and holds you together with the rest of the riders in the coaster. How is ethnicity a centripetal force in the United States?

5 Centrifugal Force. Pulls people APART.
Your washing machine is a huge centrifuge. As it spins the water gets thrown out of the clothes and onto the side of the washer where it is drained away. How is ethnicity a centrifugal force in the United States?

6 Centripetal: Helps create national unity
Nationalism Centripetal: Helps create national unity Can be centrifugal… Pride in one’s nation Jingoism Extreme nationalism Can be very dangerous and breed intolerance of difference and others Xenophobia intense or irrational dislike or fear of people from other countries.

7 Ethnic Case Studies Council
You are now a member of the UN Ethnic Conflict Council!!! You will become an expert on one area of world ethnic conflict and then you will debrief your other council member in a small group. Here is your task: Investigate your given conflict and fill in the map and summary box handout on your own. Who, what, when, where, why? Who are the ethnic groups (%), what divides them (lang? relig?), when was there conflict, where is it, why…also give update Meet with five others who are experts in a different area and take notes. When your council has finished debriefing each of the case studies, you will look at the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Read through them as a group and then a make a note for each of the case studies about a few of the rights that were specifically violated.
