Text Structure Organizer
Preview the text features. List the headings and subheadings from the text. List any other information you see from photos, charts, diagrams, or captions that help you predict what the author will tell you. Underline, or take note of, any signal words that are obvious in the text.

Practice: Colonial Resistance Grows
Today you will begin annotating “Colonial Resistance Grows”. Before you begin reading let’s follow the steps from the previous slides: Preview the text features. List the headings and subheadings from the text. List any other information you see from photos, charts, diagrams, or captions that help you predict what the author will tell you. Underline, or take note of, any signal words that are obvious in the text.

Identify the Text Structure
After reading the first 3 paragraphs, go back and identify the text structure used by the author. What signal words helped you identify the text structure? Did the text structure change from paragraph to paragraph? If so, why? Choose ONE of the paragraphs you annotated and identify the text structure. Next, create a graphic organizer to correctly display your annotated information.
