AIM: WHAT IS WEDGL??? DO NOW: 1. TAKE A VOCAB 2. IF YOU NEED TO MAKE UP THE TEST BE READY NOW! IF YOU HAVE BOTH PARTS TO MAKE UP I WILL SEE YOU AT LUNCH TODAY =( 3. TAKE OUT ESRT’S. IF YOU HAVE LOST YOUR COPY YOU WILL NEED TO PRINT A NEW ONE. HW: 1.VOCAB DUE FRIDAY 2. CHECK HW CALENDAR

9 AIM: Where is all the water?
DO NOW: What is the purpose of a shed in your backyard? HW: 1. WEDGL VOCAB DUE FRIDAY 3/1 2. LAB # 28: EVAPORATION RATES DUE : PD 1 AND 7 –FRI 3/1 & PD 4 AND 9 –THUR 2/28

10 What is the purpose of a shed in your backyard?

11 The World’s Water Supply
97% of Earth’s water is SALT water 3% is FRESH water

12 2% is confined to ice and glaciers
That only leaves 1% of all the water on Earth available for humans to use!

13

14 How is Water Recycled? The water cycle - water circulates between the hydrosphere (water) and atmosphere (air)

15

16 Water evaporates fastest when there are…
WARM TEMPERATURES FAST WINDS

17 3. HIGH SURFACE AREA 4. DRY AIR (low humidity)

18 Design a method by which you could prove that both of these samples hold the same amount of water inbetween their sediments!

19 1. Infer why water will get stuck traveling through column D. 2
1. Infer why water will get stuck traveling through column D. 2. Determine what will happen to the rate of the water as it travels through the other columns.

20 AIM: What is permeability?
DO NOW: 1. WHICH SAMPLE WILL ALLOW WATER TO FLOW THROUGH FASTER?WHY? HW: 1. VOCAB DUE FRIDAY 2. GROUNDWATER REVIEW 2018 WIZARD QUIZ DUE MONDAY AT 11:59PM 3. LAB # 28 DUE IN NEXT LAB CLASS 4. BIG GROUNDWATER QUIZ NEXT WEDNESDAY 5. READ PAGES 1-3 OF LAB # 29 TONIGHT

22

23

24 Where does the water go when it INFILTRATES the ground?
Infiltration – water seeping into the ground

25 What conditions allow for infiltration of water into ground?
Unsaturated – empty (not already filled with water) Gentle Slope – so water is able to seep in

26 Permeable – ground must have open pore spaces (porosity) to allow water to pass through (pavement or black top are not permeable.)

27 Water will infiltrate when the ground is flat and permeable

28

29 What is permeability?

30 What is permeability? The rate at which groundwater will infiltrate the rock and sediments Bigger pore spaces = faster permeability

31

32 WHAT HAPPENS IF THE WATER CANT PERMEATE INTO THE GROUND FAST ENOUGH?

33

34 Why does the water travel upward through the paper towel?

35 Capillary Action The upward movement of water against gravity

36 Occurs because water is sticky
(positive Hydrogen's and negative Oxygen attract) The smaller the pores, the higher the water rises

37 AIM: LAB # 29: POROSITY OF SOILS AND WATER FLOW DO NOW: 1
AIM: LAB # 29: POROSITY OF SOILS AND WATER FLOW DO NOW: 1. PERIODS 4 AND 9 TAKE OUT LAB # 28 TO BE COLLECTED 2. TAKE OUT LAB # 29. TURN TO PAGE 4…WE NEED TO MAKE SOME CHANGES BEFORE WE BEGIN HW: LAB # 29 DUE MONDAY

40 AIM: FINISH LAB 29 DO NOW: 1. TAKE OUT YOUR WEDGL VOCAB
AIM: FINISH LAB 29 DO NOW: 1. TAKE OUT YOUR WEDGL VOCAB. MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS ON IT (PERIOD 1 AND 7: TAKE OUT LAB # 28) 2. Take out lab #29 and turn to the data collection page. HW: 1. LAB # 29 DUE MONDAY 2. READ AND COMPLETE NOTES ON LONG ISLANDS WATER(WEBSITE) 3. GROUNDWATER wizard Monday at 11:59pm

46 AIM: What is the water table?
DO NOW:1. Take out lab# 29 and make sure your name is on it. 2. PONDER THIS IF YOU SPILL A LIQUID ON YOUR GRANITE COUNTER DOES IT SOAK IN?????? HW: 1.GROUNDWATER WIZARD REVIEW DUE TONIGHT AT 11:59PM. 2. FILL IN “LONG ISLANDS WATER” NOTES AND ANY UNFINISHED GROUNDWATER NOTES FROM WEBSITE 3. QUIZ WEDNESDAY

47 What is the water table? The level of stored water within rock and sediments underneath us. Where the zone of saturation meets the zone of aeration.

48

49

50 The Water Table Groundwater flows from areas where the water-table is high, to areas where it’s low.

51 Why do lakes and streams dry up?

52 A lack of condensation will DECREASE the water table
An increase in condensation will INCREASE the water table

53 What determines the changing level of our water table?

54 Porosity – the percentage of pore space
Water is found in the pores between particles of rock.

55 The more pores there are, the more water can be held

56 High Porosity Low Porosity

57 What affects porosity?

58 ROUND DOESN’T FIT CLOSE
1. Shape of Particle ANGULAR FITS CLOSER Low Porosity ROUND DOESN’T FIT CLOSE High Porosity B A

59 2. Packing CLOSER = LESS SPACE FARTHER = MORE SPACE Higher Porosity

60 3. Sorting Well Sorted Unsorted High Porosity Low Porosity A B

61 The total porosity will be equal if they have the same shape and sorting…..regardless of size

62

63 Runoff

64

65 What conditions cause Runoff?
Ground is frozen (not permeable)

66 2. Soil is already fully saturated with water
3. Rainfall exceeds the rate of infiltration

67 4. The slope of the land is steep
5. Vegetation of area has been stripped away
