HIV HIV stands for “human immunodeficiency virus” this is the virus that leads to Aids. Once you get HIV you have it for life. The virus attacks the immune system.

What is a virus? A virus is an infective agent that is a nucleic acid molecule in a protein coat.

How does a virus reproduce?
Viruses depend on the host cells they infect to reproduce, the reproduction may be more intense depending on the cells or less intense.

Where did it come from? It is believed that HIV came from chimpanzees. When they were hunted people could get infected from their blood.

Ken Horne was the first patient of HIV to be reported in San Francisco during the 1980s. His infection had fever and flue like symptoms.

Around half of the people with HIV develop Aids within 10 years.
