1 Fieldwork 3 Assignment 3 Re-engagement Lesson

2 Table of Contents Slides 3-5 Overview
Slides 6-8 Where can you get information about this assignment Slides 9-13 Samples of assignment from previous candidates Slides What steps do I take ? Slides Details you need once you are about to complete the lesson related to do what you do after the instructional part of the assignment

3 Overview: WHY Assignment 3?
Chance to practice Task 4 of the edTPA

4 Overview: edTPA focuses on equitable learning outcomes for ALL students
Teachers need to use data to identify next steps in instruction Teachers need to use formative assessment during teaching to understand student’s specific needs Assignment 3 will help you practice, before you complete the edTPA “for real” in student teaching

5 Overview: IMPORTANT This assignment will be completed in the second half of your placement It requires conversation with CT & planning

6 WHERE CAN YOU GET INFORMATION ABOUT THIS ASSIGNMENT?

7 ASSIGNMENT #3 DESCRIPTION ON SYLLABUS

8 Your Activity Checklist lists the steps that your CT needs to sign off on

9 EXAMPLES FROM PREVIOUS FIELD 3 STUDENTS

10 Look for the following in these examples:
Was data used to identify which students needed re- teaching and to analyze error patterns Was explicit re-teaching provided that included I do, We do, You do in a short lesson? Was formative assessment collected in the “you do” phase?

11 Re-engagement Lesson Example 1
3rd grade class Teacher completed running records Data showed 4 students who are still learning diphthong /oi/ FE3 candidate developed a short re-engagement mini-lesson on diphthongs Used a formative assessment to determine student learning (each student read two sentences that contained several /oi/)

12 Do you see the data that informed this minilesson
Do you see the data that informed this minilesson? Do you see the individual assessment in the “you do” step? 3rd grade class Teacher completed running records Data showed 4 students who are still learning diphthong /oi/ FE3 candidate developed a short re-engagement mini- lesson on diphthongs ( I do, we do, you do) For the “you do” part used formative assessment to determine student learning (each student read two sentences that contained several /oi/)

13 Another example…Look for the following:
Was data used to identify which students needed re-teaching and to analyze error patterns Was explicit re-teaching provided that included I do, We do, You do in a short lesson? Was formative assessment collected in the “you do” phase?

14 Re-engagement Lesson Example 2
6th grade math class Last chapter test showed 3 students were still learning how to find the area of triangles FE3 candidate designed a short re-engagement mini- lesson for these students: Teacher did a problem while talking through steps. Students did problems on white board with prompting from teacher. Students did a problem independently with no help Used a formative assessment (exit slip) at the end to gauge student learning. Students completed one problem independently

15 Re-engagement Lesson Example 2
6th grade math class Last chapter test showed 3 students were still learning how to find the area of triangles FE3 candidate designed a short re-engagement mini-lesson for these students I do: Teacher did a problem while talking through steps (explicit instruction) We do: Students did problems on white board with prompting from teacher You do: Students did a problem independently with no help Used a formative assessment (exit slip) at the end to gauge student learning. Students completed one problem independently

16 Remember: When you complete task 4 for the edTPA, the handbook says it must be math content. But for fieldwork 3 you can use ANY content area.

17 WHAT ARE MY STEPS TO COMPLETE THIS ASSIGNMENT?

18 FIRST STEP: TALK WITH CT TO DETERMINE PLAN OF ACTION
Explain the assignment to the CT in visit 3 or 4 You should reread the assignment in the syllabus BEFORE talking to your CT Then, look at the checklist with your CT Some CTs say they “do not do” small group instruction. In that case, reach out to your supervisor. We have a solution!! If you are having difficulties, your supervisor. By visit 5, you should be making plans for this assignment so you can complete it in visit 6-10

19 PLAN AND IMPLEMENT RE-ENGAGEMENT MINILESSON IN THE 2nd HALF OF YOUR PLACEMENT
Use data used to identify which students needed re- teaching and to analyze error patterns Plan explicit re-teaching that includes I do, We do, You do in a short (10-15 minute) lesson Develop a quick formative assessment to collect information in the “you do” phase

20 FINAL STEP: REFLECT & WRITE UP
Follow directions in the syllabus for responding to the prompt in the edTPA handbook Please look at those before teaching the lesson, so you know what you will need to address after teaching the lesson (remember edTPA handbook will state this needs to be math related; but in fieldwork any content area is fine)

21 SPECIFICS YOU NEED TO KNOW ONCE YOU ARE COMPLETING ASSIGNMENT 3

22 What you need after you have taught the re-engagement lesson.
Reread the directions in the syllabus Use the edTPA Task 4 template to type into and submit on LiveText Use the correct edTPA rubric to consult to self-evaluate your answer to the prompt Remember: When you complete task 4 for the edTPA, it will be with math content. For practice in fieldwork 3, you can use ANY content

23 I have put arrows next to the two most common questions I get
I have put arrows next to the two most common questions I get. Read those bullets carefully

24 Use the Task 4 edTPA Template Locate it on BB Community/edTPA site ( You will submit the template on Livetext) Look for Task 4 Mathematics Commentary Remember: When you complete task 4 for the edTPA, it will be with math content. For practice in fieldwork 3, you can use ANY content

25 You are ONLY responding to Prompt 4b
You will not submit the lesson plans nor the formative assessment; you will only submit your response to prompt 4b

26 FINAL STEP: REFLECT & WRITE UP
Remember: When you complete task 4 for the edTPA, it will be with math content. For practice you can use ANY content FINAL STEP: REFLECT & WRITE UP This is the same rubric the edTPA evaluator will use to assess your prompt. Use it to self-assess your written response to 4b—aim to get a level 4 or a level 5
