We would be ill advised to begin trying to transform the IT Organization before we understood where we are currently, and where we want to go

4. Build a comprehensive “picture” of the IT Organization
Two separate activities will help us to prepare

There is an enormous amount of data to gather
Strike an appropriate balance between definitions that are too tight and those that are too loose
Cultural, social, political variables may affect data accuracy

There will be a tendency to think of how to “tweak” the current organization rather than envision a new organization

6. We will collect data in three waves, each followed by an analysis of the information we collected1
