4 TYPES OF LATENT VARIABLES/FACTORS
Hypothetical variables. There is theoretical constructs for example self esteem with underlying observable traits. Variables that it’s difficult to measure or can’t be measured directly. Data reduction devices. The latent variable factor is a convenient way of summarising a large number of variables. We might examine how much an item loads on a factor. Latent variables or factors are hypothetical constructs that cannot be directly measured. Group attachment is defined as the individual’s sense of belonging to a particular group and his or her feelings of morale associated with it. Sense of belonging relates to feeling experiences arising from belonging to a group of morale relate to the appraisal of these experiences.

6 Group attachment is defined as the individual’s sense of belonging to a particular group and his or her feelings of morale associated with it. Sense of belonging relates to feeling experiences arising from belonging to a group of morale relate to the appraisal of these experiences. The indicators of belonging were I feel a sense of belonging to the group/community I feel I’m a member of the community/group I see myself as part of the community/group Indicators of morale were I am enthusiastic about the community/group I am happy to be in (or at) the community/group This group/community is one of the best The responses were recorded on a ten point Likert scale ranging from 0 strongly disagree to 5 neutral to 10 strongly agree. The purpose of factor analysis is to estimate a model that explains the variance and covariance between a sample of observable variables by a set of unobserved factors.
