Monarchy The supreme power is held by a hereditary sovereign, as a king, queen, or emperor.

Dictatorship/Totalitarian
Absolute power is held by one person or a small group.

Theocracy Rule by a religious group. Laws based on religious beliefs and principles.

Communism All economic and social activity is controlled by a single political party. Actual ownership belongs to the community or to the state.

Direct Democracy All Voters/Citizens have a direct say in all government decisions.

Democratic Republic The government is directly chosen by the people (i.e., through elections); and government authority comes from the will of the people.

Presidential Democracy
The President (head of Government) is directly chosen by the people (i.e., through elections).

Parliamentary Democracy
The Prime Minister (head of Government) is chosen by Parliament. Members of Parliament are chosen directly by the people (i.e., through elections).
