5 Era of Good Feelings Era of Good Feelings label comes from a single but important Good Will tour of New England in 1817. Americans felt a sense of unity and national purpose. Ran unopposed in 1820 and got all but 4 electoral votes

7 The American System Protective tariffs are taxes that make imported goods very expensive, it is a way of making American goods desirable because they are cheap. Northern states favored the tariffs because northern manufacturers would benefit from less competition from foreign countries.

8 Court Cases McCulloch v. Maryland- Maryland’s state powers did not include the right to tax institutions created by the federal government. Gibbons v. Ogden- only the federal government has the power to regulate interstate commerce (trade or business between states).

10 Florida Acquisition Spain would not police Florida, which was haven for many Africans & African Americans who had escaped slavery. Adams-Onis Treaty- Spain agreed to give Florida to the United States for $5 million. The boundaries of the United States had expanded once again.

12 Monroe Doctrine In Latin America, it is a period of revolution and liberation. Chile, Venezuela, Mexico and Brazil have gained their freedom from Spain and Portugal. The United States recognizes them as legitimate countries. America fears that other foreign countries like France and Britain may now want to control these countries in Latin America.

13 Monroe Doctrine--1823 Western Hemisphere
Stated the the U.S. would not tolerate European intervention in Latin America. The U.S. would resist any nation trying to interfere in the affairs of nations in the Western Hemisphere.

14 Monroe Doctrine cont…. Warns European nations that they cannot set up colonies or interfere in Latin American problems anymore. The United States will protect North and South America from any European influence. The United States will not involve itself in European affairs militarily or politically.

Nationalism- sense of unity and pride. Court cases: Gibbon v. Ogden- only fed gov’t can regulate interstate commerce. McCulloch v. Maryland- state powers cannot collect taxes from federal institutions. Acquired Spain and therefore expanded U.S. boundaries. Monroe Doctrine- foreign policy- BUTT OUT of the Western Hemisphere’s biznesssss!
