Green Dorm Room- Team 12 Jocelyn Connolly Seth Gregor Chris Gigliotti Weighted Hierarchal Customer Needs List Abstract The objective of our project is to redesign Penn State University dorms to be greener by implementing more sustainable resources and technology. Our report gives a detailed explanation of customer needs assessment, which we found that the most important factors to our consumers were being comfortable and low cost. From this we derived our revised problem statement, implementing sustainable changes without affecting any of our other customer needs. To help us generate ideas we conducted an external search and from there generated more concepts. We incorporated our concepts into our final design where we then proceeded to select the materials. Based on our research we concluded that geothermal heating and cooling is the best way to maintain a comfortable temperature while remaining at low cost. Also, because of its abundance in the United States, we chose natural gas for energy generation. We decided to keep the layout of the current bathrooms; however, we chose to implement low flow plumbing and faucet sensors. Other changes we made were adding motion sensor lighting for energy conservation, moveable furniture, more storage, and bigger windows for natural lighting.
