If you had to earn $1,000, how would you do it?

Think About It: What does economy mean? Where have you heard this word? Remember: MONEY! MONEY! MONEY!

3 Understand: 1. Economy- The way goods and services are produced and distributed in a place. How do you make it? How do you sell it? How do you buy it?

4 Economy 1. Get the resources needed to make the cars.
Everything we buy goes through many steps and many people before we get it. 2. Make the cars in a factory and ship it out to dealerships. 3. Car dealership sells the car to customers. This creates jobs and incomes in countries around the world.

5 What does industry mean? Where have you heard this word?

How may I help you?

10 There are two types of things you can sell and buy.
Understand: There are two types of things you can sell and buy. Goods, or objects, you can walk away with in your hand Services, or help, people can provide you

11 Service vs. Manufacturing Industry
Service industries produce intangible goods. Manufacturing industries produce tangible goods.

12 Goods vs. Services 5. Goods-
Tangible, or touchable, objects that satisfy what you need or want Examples: hamburgers, video game, pencils 6. Services- Intangible actions or activities that one person performs for another Examples: teaching, cleaning, cooking

13 1. Let’s see the manufacturing and service industries in action.
Activity 1. Let’s see the manufacturing and service industries in action. You need one partner Decide who will be the “Manufacturer” and who will be the “Service Worker” Split the class into three (2 customers, and split the rest of the class into "manufactures" and "service") - have one side "manufacture" by folding paper airplanes - The other side will go to the "manufactures" and take the finished paper airplane to the customer and try to sell them a "service" (such as a trip on the airplane") Then have a conversation about what each side did: The Manufacturing side, made the GOOD (the paper airplane) --- explain that it is tangible, they can hold it, use it such as clothing cars, house, etc. You could ask them to give you examples of these things The Service side - provided a ride on the airplane- the item was intangible- they could not keep it after they were done with it. Examples: waiters, Fiesta Texas, Sea World, Hotels, etc. Service

14 Activity 2. Manufacturers will make a paper airplane in any style they choose. They have one minute to reach their deadline and have a completed product. 3. Manufacturers will deliver their finished product to the service industry workers. 4. Service workers, think of a service that could be provided with your airplane. Write the name of the company on the side of the plane. 5. The service worker will try and sell their product to the customer in a short sales pitch. (the manufacturer will play the customer and listen) Split the class into three (2 customers, and split the rest of the class into "manufactures" and "service") - have one side "manufacture" by folding paper airplanes - The other side will go to the "manufactures" and take the finished paper airplane to the customer and try to sell them a "service" (such as a trip on the airplane") Then have a conversation about what each side did: The Manufacturing side, made the GOOD (the paper airplane) --- explain that it is tangible, they can hold it, use it such as clothing cars, house, etc. You could ask them to give you examples of these things The Service side - provided a ride on the airplane- the item was intangible- they could not keep it after they were done with it. Examples: waiters, Fiesta Texas, Sea World, Hotels, etc. Service

15 Summarize What did the manufacturers do? Did all the finished products look the same? Made the good: a tangible good - NO What did the service workers so? Were they all selling the same service? Provided an intangible product: a service – NO How is this similar to conditions in the real world economy? Variety of quality, style, service, speed of delivery and manufacture etc.
