7 The Concordat and the two popes
Hitler and the Pope signed a Concordat in 1933 – shortly after Hitler got into power. Hitler agreed to leave the Catholic Church alone and let it keep running Catholic schools. Niemoller openly criticised the Nazis in the 1930s. He formed an alternative Protestant Church which didn’t support them called the Confessional Church. For speaking out against the Nazis and forming this alternative church he was sent to a concentration camp from He survived. First they came for the communists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist. Then they came for the socialists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me.
