Joseph: A Good Example Genesis 39:1-2
3
Things we can learn from Joseph
It is entirely possible for young people to lead godly lives! Jacob’s son Joseph is a wonderful example of godliness Reading Genesis 37 thru 50 we see it throughout his life
4
He is an obedient, respectful
young person (37:13) From verse 2 we learn that he is 17 years old When his father has work for him there is no argument No excuses, only “I will go” as a helper should
5
He understands sin from
both sides (39:7-10) Not as both saint and sinner, but against man and God He refuses Potiphar’s wife because he understands sin Apparently there is something more important than sex!
6
He keeps his faith in times of
trouble (39:19-20, 40:14, 23) Her lie imprisons him, a fellow prisoner forgets him From 41:1 we know he was in prison more than two years So many let problems rule their lives, but he did not
7
He gave God His due praise (41:15-16)
Pharaoh needed someone to interpret his dreams The report to him (12-13) was of Joseph’s ability How many today need to learn the humility of Joseph?
8
His high position does not
inflate him (41:39-40) As governor we do not see power corrupting him What the former prisoner gives is faithful service From verse 46 we learn he is only 30 years of age
9
He shows no vengeance to those who hated him
In 42:21-24 he weeps as he hears his brothers confess In 43:26-31 he weeps as he sees his brother In 45:1-8 he weeps aloud and reveals who he is In 46:28-30 he weeps as a son, not as a ruler
10
His faith testifies of God even
after his death (50:22-26) He made arrangements for his embalming and carrying He had faith his bones would reach the promised land On their travels his remains would remind them of the goal
