November 2006 Effective use of U of T Library System by Physics students and staff Barbara Chu Physics Librarian

November 20062 General Information Key libraries of your research interest Key databases of your research interest

November 20063 Campus Libraries About 40 libraries Main Library system Gerstein Science Information Centre Engineering & Computer Science Library Noranda Earth Sciences Library Departmental libraries – subject specialties

November 20064 Main Library System Gerstein Science Information Centre Strong collection in physical and health sciences – shifting their focus to health sciences Engineering & Computer Science Library Noranda Earth Sciences Library

November 20065 Departmental Libraries Physics Library Chemistry Library Astronomy Library Mathematical Sciences Library

November 20066 What This Means For print items (books or journals), go to the holding libraries stated in the Catalogue. For subject research, best to seek assistance from the departmental libraries.

November 20068 Where & How to Find What You Want Catalogue Book with Author/Editor By Title – most direct By Author/Editor – may give a list of many publications Books on a Topic Select Containing and type in term(s). By default, searching in any field Journal (Paper copy or online version) Select Starting and by Title or Journal Title (recommended)

November 20069 Where & How to Find What You Want (contd) Journal Indexes & Abstracts (Online) INSPEC – physics, electrical & electronic engineering, computer & control engineering, information technology, and manufacturing & production engineering (journal articles, conf. papers and other types of documents). GeoRef – geoscience literature (journal articles, books, maps, conf. papers) Meteorological & Geoastrophysical Abstracts (MGA) – literature on meteorology, climatology, atmospheric chemistry and physics and related environmental sciences. Web of Science – multidisciplinary research journal articles only, offering as well cited reference searching back to 1945. Scopus – multidisciplinary research literature (journal articles, conf. papers, trade publications and book series) and quality web sources. Offering as well cited reference searching but only back to 1996. Encyclopedia & Reference Books (Online) AccessScience (McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology) Knovel (collection of science and engineering reference books)

November 200610 Tips & Tricks - When unsure if a title is available online, search in the Catalogue which includes records for both print and online versions. - When sure that a title is available online, (e-journal, e-book, e- reference (handbooks, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, etc.), it is best to search under All e-resources tab on the UTL homepage. - When searching an e-title and it asks for a password for full-text access, it means UTL has not subscribed to that title or purchased that year. We have no right for access. - When accessing licensed library databases, may use direct publisher sites from campus. From home, need to go through UTL homepage for validation.

November 200611 Tips & Tricks (contd) - Do not think we have everything online - journals only in recent years (varies for each title) we have available online. Many online archives are not yet available on campus although librarians are trying to acquire whenever funding is possible. - no fear, we have many archives in print copy - What do I do when I cant find print or online - Gerstein Resource Sharing can provide interlibrary loan service (obtain externally for you) at $5.00 per journal article (up to 50 pp) and no charge for book loan – service for all science members at the university. Use RACER online ordering service when using Gerstein. - Physics Library provides ILL service also but only for members of the Physics Dept. Come to see us.
