INDUSTRIAL ECOLOGY TO MANAGE COOLING TOWER FILLS WASTE IN KENGEN OLKARIA GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANTS Presented by: Josphat R. Mwandigha 2018 G2G INNOVATION SEMINAR, PRIDE INN SPA & RESORT 18TH JUNE - 22ND JUNE 2018

2 Diploma-Environmental Science
JOSPHAT R. MWANDIGHA Natural Resource Management Technician, Resource Development & Infrastructure Department Currently undertaking BSc. Environment, Conservation & Natural Resource Mgt. Diploma-Environmental Science Registered Environmental Impact Assessment Expert Member-Conservation Leadership Program 6 yrs experience in energy sector Area of interest- conservation and resource management

3 Presentation Outline Introduction Problem Objective Project concept
1 Problem 2 Objective 4 Project concept 5 Risks and Opportunities 6 Conclusions and recommendations 7

4 INTRODUCTION Final disposal process of fills waste biggest challenge
Not all waste is waste Industrial ecology - exchange of material between different industrial sectors Co-processing-Use of waste as raw material, or as a source of energy, or both to replace natural mineral resources

5 PROBLEM STATEMENT Cooling tower fills waste are hazardous and non biodegradable Volumes of these wastes dumped in temporary holding bays-Olkaria More expected cumulatively Attempt to source licensed waste handlers have always hit a dead end Few or no solutions available Potential polluting Hells gate ecosystem

6 OBJECTIVES To contribute towards National waste management strategy
To promote sound management of cooling tower fills waste To pursue opportunities which can be realized from waste management

7 PROJECT CONCEPT Visited Lafarge Holcim- Bamburi cement factory Mombasa plant Accept/refuse chart applies in selection of waste(source CPCB-India)

10 EXISTING SCENARIO Projected & actual waste from overhauls Plant
Projected (m3) Date Actual (m3) Olk 11 unit 1&3 1420 N/A - Olk 1AU unit 5 980 2017 Olk IV unit 2 Olk 11 unit 2 2012 150 2014 560 Olk 1AU unit 4 Olk IV unit 1 Totals 3,380 2,670 Source: Geothermal plant overhaul records

11 SCENARIO CONT Projected waste from wellheads Wellhead Fills (Pieces)
Volume (m3) OW-37 157(4.95 kg) 38.59 OW-39 157 OW- 43 118 29.00 OW-905 OW- 914 275 67.60 OW- 915 OW- 919 Totals 1,178 289.55 Projected waste from wellheads Source: Green Energy

12 RISKS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Heavy penalties due to non compliance Risk of losing funding opportunities Tainting of company image Conflicts with stakeholders - KWS & community Climate change impacts losing ISO certification

13 RISKS AND OPPORTUNITIES CONT’
Collaborate with Bamburi Cement & Geo-cycle Co Latter utilizes energy recovery technologies -incineration /co-processing -energy used in their cement kiln’s. Ashes =clinker, raw material-cement-zero waste remains Each participating firm benefit economically; Reduced cost for waste disposal, efficiency resource use, improved environmental performance, enhanced image, improved relations with other industries …………..Waste, taken as an opportunity

14 CONCLUSION Co-processing considered best in waste management hierarchy Responsible disposal Zero residues and absorption of gases Eliminate potential future liability Triple win(WIN WIN WIN)

15 RECOMENDATIONS KenGen geothermal to embrace industrial ecology Trial runs of the target waste MoU between KenGen, Bamburi cement and Geo-cycle

16 ….Health ecology is the basis for a health economy
