Examples: retail, education, health, leisure & hospitality Business Services: facilitate other businesses Examples: financial, professional, transportation Public Services: provide security and protection Examples: police, government, educators

6 U.S. Growth Since the 1970s, U.S. has seen a decrease in the secondary sector and a sharp increase in the tertiary sector.

Central Business District (CBD) 3 main types of services: high threshold, high range, servicing CBD workers Compact: small % of area, large % of services Visually distinctive One of oldest parts High land costs lead to skyscrapers

8 Christaller’s CPT showed that:
(1.) Larger a settlement, fewer there are (2.) Larger a settlement, farther away a similar size settlement is (3.) Range increases as the population increases (4.) The larger the settlement, the higher the order of its services (5.) Exceptions exist: tourist resort and dormitory town Small pop, many functions & large pop, few functions

Market areas are arranged in a regular pattern. Larger settlements have both larger and smaller market areas drawn around them.

11 The Gravity Model GM predicts the likelihood of 2 cities to interact regarding migration and services: (1.) Directly related to population - higher population = more potential customers (2.) Inversely related to range - farther away = less likely to use
