3 How do we know Abraham Lincoln lived?
Have you met him? Have you ever met anyone who has met him? Have you seen his body?

4 The study of HISTORY. HISTORY is – HISTORIANS are –
A chronological record of past events often including an explanation of their causes. A branch of knowledge that collects and explains past events. HISTORIANS are – Scientists who study past events.

5 Related areas of study Geography – the study of the earth’s surface.
Anthropology – the study of humans. Archaeology – the study of remains from past human societies. Economics – study of scarcity, resources, and profit motives.

6 What do these people find?
Two types of evidence or sources. PRIMARY sources Evidence from a person or source who was actually present at an event or during a time period. Diaries, autobiographies, paintings, photographs, artifacts, written records Other examples? SECONDARY sources Evidence from a person or source that came after an event or time period. Encyclopedias, textbooks, history books

7 What can we trust? How do we know that primary or secondary sources are trustworthy or valid? What could make a source untrustworthy or invalid?

8 Reasons to doubt a source.
Bias – prejudice, opinions formed before research. Wrong frame of reference (time period). Historical inaccuracies (wrong information).

What evidence or sources do we have? Why can we trust these sources?

11 Why to study history 10. Appreciate those who came before us We all have history, it's YOUR responsibility to learn about your own past. What do you appreciate from the past?

12 Why to study history 9. Those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. If you don't learn from other people's mistakes, you won't ever get anywhere in life! Give an example of a mistake you’ve learned from that you didn’t have to make?

13 Why to study history 8. Past struggles and accomplishments have shaped our lives. Without certain events/people in history, we would be nowhere. Can you think of a past struggle that has helped shape your life?

14 Why to study history 7. History helps you understand how it influenced the creation of certain traditions. What traditions does your family have that have historical context

15 Why to study History 6. It helps us determine how and why certain laws were developed. Why do you think we are trying to impose sanctions on NK? What happened when we put sanctions on Japan?

16 Why to study History 5. It teaches us to think for ourselves. You are free to form your own opinions about history! There are multiple sides to every story. Do you believe everything you hear on the news?

18 Why to study History 2. History gives us role models and heroes. Different types of history gives us different types of role models. military history, world history, American history, religious history, art history, film history, political history, and much more!

19 Why to study History 1. It makes you an interesting person!! Doesn't it feel good to sound smart?? Once you know history and find something that interests you, you will grow to LOVE it!
