Chapter 4 Models, Critique, and Descriptive Feedback Book Study Presented by: Kayla Hatcher
2
Today’s Learning Target
I can identify models, critiques, and descriptive feedback strategies that will support student engaged assessment.
3
Let’s Investigate Look at the handouts with a partner and compare and contrast the students’ work samples in front on you. Scaffold Discussions Questions starters: What do you notice about the open response? What help you understand the thinking of a the students works ample? What confused you?
4
Group discussion and facilitation
Ask teachers questions. On chart paper, record academic language and learning strategies that is discussed.. After discussion, ask teacher what did they notice about you as the facilitator? ( record responses on new chart paper) What did they noticed about themselves as students and their learning?
5
Why Models, Critiques, and Descriptive Feedback
Gives students tools and strategies to use for successfully accomplishing learning goals Supports understanding that learning, work, and performances can ALWAYS be improved Contribute to collaboration and creates safe learning environments
6
Be Kind Be Specific Be Helpful
Starting Point Establish Guidelines Be Kind Be Specific Be Helpful
7
Starting point Choosing Work samples and/or Models:
Have features that are connected to learning targets Show students direction toward completing learning target successfully . Represent different approaches Anonymous samples Weak and strong samples
8
2 types of critique Lessons
* Gallery Critique In-Depth Critique
9
2 types of critique Lessons
Gallery Walk In-depth Critique effective ideas (only) Use to find strategies while using work samples Use when you want to highlight positive features (only) that will help everyone. Used to highlight: Gaps in knowledge Uncover strengths Common areas of revision Features effective and ineffective strategies/ features
10
The Teacher’s role: Facilitator Provide Feedback Planning
11
The Teacher’s role: Facilitator
Be a strong guardian of Critique Norms Keep the critique moving at an interesting, energetic pace Distill, shape, and record the insights from critique Focus on naming the specific qualities and strategies that students can take away with them Teach the vocabulary
12
The Teacher’s role: Provide feedback
Provide feedback to individual Students Speed feedback
13
The Teacher’s role: planning
How often? When should feedback be given? How much feedback? The right balance between group and individual feed back Clarity Content of feedback
14
Feedback in Practice Watch video clip & observe teacher’s role
15
Feedback in Practice
16
Feedback in Practice Partner talk Discussion points What did you notice? about the teacher (strategies) Of the students Learning Environment
17
Feedback in Practice Make a part of daily lessons Teacher-to-student Peer-and-self assessment Feedback in small groups Schoolwide Implementation
