1 Law and Policy of Relevance to the Management of Plant Genetic Resources

2 Purpose of the Workshop
To strengthen capacity of national PGRFA programme managers to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainability of national programmes and their research on genetic resources

3 Major Objective To provide opportunities for those who have practical management and/or policy-making responsibilities for plant genetic resources to get acquainted with the policy environment to promote the sound and scientific management of PGRFA to understand, implement and shape existing laws, agreements and policies that affect genetic resource management

4 Expected Outputs Improved knowledge of the international instruments to manage Genetic Resource Research Increased awareness on the importance of applying Law and Policy among target group

5 Objectives of Day One To discuss background and rationale of the workshop: goals, general objectives and expected outputs To explain the use of the participant action plan approach (PAPA) To identify trainees and trainers To describe how historical realities can affect current judgements To assess if policies affected by historical realities are effective in tackling the set of problems they are facing today To identify problematic elements of restrictive legislation and discuss how they could be changed
