When a ray of light is incident on a material like mirror, it undergoes reflection. The incoming ray is incident ray, the outgoing ray is the reflected ray and the line at right- angles to the mirror’s surface is called a normal. The angle between the incident ray and the normal is called the angle of incidence. The angle between the reflected ray and the normal is called the angle of reflection.

4 7.02 Reflection in plane mirrors
Laws of reflection: The angle of incidence is equal to angle of reflection. The incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal all lie in the same plane.

6 7.02 Reflection in plane mirrors
Rules for image size and position: The size of the image is same as that of the object. The image is as far behind the mirror as the object is in front. A line joining equivalent points on the object and the image passes through the mirror at right angles. Note: The image is laterally inverted and virtual

Real and virtual images: For a real image light rays actually converge at a point to form the image. for a virtual image, the rays appear to converge. E.g. image in a plane mirror.
