Refrain: a repeated sound, word, phrase, line, or group of lines. It is used to build rhythm and emphasize important themes or messages. As you read the Gettysburg Address, look for the words and phrases that Lincoln chose to repeat.

Read slowly and carefully and record in one column, any comments and questions suggested by your first reading. Then, in a second column, write down answers to your questions and additional thoughts as you read the speech a second time.
