4 Introduction The Formula SAE racing series is put on by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) A competition that allows students across the globe to design, build, test, and market small, single seat, open wheel racing cars The University of New Hampshire (UNH) Precision Racing Team is a Formula SAE team It is comprised of students studying Mechanical engineering Electrical and Computer engineering and Business

5 Competition Overview - Rules
Force the team to be run like a business Full documentation required including Manufacturing cost Design methodologies Sales pitch Cost and design review All of these materials are to be presented with the vehicle at competition

6 Competition Overview - Scoring
Racing Points Skid pad – 50 pts. Acceleration – 75 pts. Autocross – 150 pts. Endurance – 300 pts. Fuel Economy – 100 pts. Presentation Points Design – 150 pts. Marketing – 75 pts. Cost Report – 100 pts. Static Tests – Not graded Tilt Table Brake Check Sound Check Tech Inspection Total = 1000 pts.

7 Previous Results Several FSAE competitions are held globally each year; the most prestigious being Formula SAE Michigan UNH has participated the past nine years at the Michigan event This past year the UNH Precision Racing Team placed 32nd out of 120 engineering universities

8 Performance Measurements – The Problem
Factors that dictate performance and reliability of the car are becoming harder to observe by the human eye Thousands of events happen per second that dictate the dynamic performance of the car To set up the car to reach its performance potential these events need to be measured, recorded, and analyzed.

9 Performance Measurements – The Solution
An advanced, high speed electronics package is being added to the design of the car Fifty sensors will measure and record the many dynamic parameters associated with a precision racing vehicle Analysis of this data enables the team to make adjustments with the car to improve the vehicles performance and durability

10 General System Overview

11 System Core The proposed data acquisition system is centered around a Cypress PSoC 5 Control data measurement, storage and transmission of data Communicate with the car's sensor network, engine control unit, dashboard, and various other systems Data recorded is stored on a SD card for future analysis Data is also transmitted in real time via a 900MHz XBee radio module Due to limited bandwidth, live data will have a lower measurement frequency than data stored on the SD card

12 Sensors Used to measure parameters such as
Suspension position Acceleration Vehicle speed Data from these sensors will be used to Make adjustments to vehicle handling Train drivers in proper technique Provide early warning and diagnostic information pertaining to vehicle problems

13 Wireless Communication
A Digi XBee wireless network Transfer live vehicle data Digi XBee Pro 900 MHz modules Output power of 50 mW Duck style RPSMA antennas Range of ~1/2 mile line of sight Data rates up to 156 Kbps Used to program the engine control unit wirelessly

14 Data Analysis Software - Overview
Custom software package written in Java Functionality includes ability to Plot, analyze and review live and recorded data Video playback GPS Tracking System

15 Data Analysis Software - Interface

16 Current Progress Currently many of the key functions of the system have been tested and verified Early version of the analysis software Video playback Synchronization of static plots and video play-back Communication with engine control unit and XBee wireless link Live graphs and data tables update dynamically After-run statistics for each sensor available Average and maximum values for each

17 What Needs To Be Done There is still a lot left to do!
Sensors need to be added to the car Data Analysis software needs to Read data from the “to be added” sensors Add more graphs and rows to data table for new sensors Implement GPS track plotting Digital Filter implementation for SD card data files Car needs to be wired after it is built Secure more sponsorships Money is a necessity!

18 System Cost The estimated cost for the project is $3,845. The budget is broken down as shown below.
