Each pixel works like a bucket collecting light Makes a count based on energy The more light energy, the more counts A black picture should have no pixel count But this isn’t true, dark current adds energy -> ups pixel count Dark current is based on thermal energy As long as camera is heated, there is dark current

Can reduce dark current by cooling camera Measure dark current by taking black picture Measurement used to subtract dark current from telescope pictures

If we can just subtract it, why waste power, weight, and energy to cool it down? Two parts to dark current Average—can be subtracted Random—cannot be subtracted Can still have a washed out picture Can accidentally subtract out faint stars
