1 Unit 3: Early Modern Times (1300 – 1800) Ch 13 - 16
Developments in technology, culture, science, religion and politics will lead to the beginning of Early Modern Times.

2 Quick Review: Ch. 13 - 14 What was the impact of the Renaissance?
What was the impact of the Protestant Reformation? Why did Europeans become interested in exploration during the 1400s? What impact did European exploration have in Africa / Asia?

3 Ch. 15: The Beginnings of Our Global Age: Europe and the Americas 1492 – 1750
The European discovery and settlement of the Americas will transform global interaction and the course of World History. EQ: In what ways did the European discovery of the Americas transform the course of global history?

4 S1: Conquest in the Americas
Columbus ‘accidentally’ discovers the Americas in Remember, he was seeking a faster sea route to Asia when he landed in the ‘New World’. His first meeting with the Native Americans begins a cycle of encounter, conquest, and death that will be repeated throughout the Western Hemisphere. Is Columbus a good guy, bad guy, both or neither? Why?

5 Wave of Spanish Conquistadors (Conquerors)
Spanish Conquerors, such as Hernan Cortes and Francisco Pizarro, arrive in the Americas and conquer the Natives. Effects of Spanish Conquistadors Spain takes gold/silver, becoming a great power in Europe Many Native Americans die from European diseases (Native Americans lacked immunity) and conquest Native American culture influences Latin America Much of the world now more connected by sea routes, carrying goods, people, and ideas Where the Spanish Conquistadors good guys, bad guys, both or neither? Why?

6 S2: Spanish and Portuguese Colonies in the Americas
As the conquistadors established Spain’s new empire in the Western World, many Spanish settlers and missionaries came to the Americas. They established colonies, claiming the land and its people for their king and church. Green Territory in Americas = Colonized by Spain and Portugal

7 New Culture Develops Over time the New World will develop a culture that reflects European, Native American, and African traditions. Any examples of European, Native American, or African influence in American culture?

8 S3: Struggle for North America
Following Spain’s success in the South, other European nations begin to compete for settlement in North America during the 1600s. By 1700, France and England have come to control large parts of North America.

9 Struggling for Power By 1754, fighting for control in North America between England and France erupts into the French and Indian War. Fighting continues until 1763, ending with English victory and dominance in North America. French and Indian War - The French Colonists and Their Indian Allies vs. the English Colonists Why can’t we all just get along?

10 S4: The Atlantic Slave Trade
As European powers establish colonies in the Americas, the slave trade grows. Develops into a Triangular Trade System. Europe -> European Goods taken to Africa Africa - > Slaves traded for European Goods and sent to the Americas Americas - > American goods traded for African slaves, then goods taken back to Europe.

11 Horrors of the Middle Passage
Conditions for African Slaves aboard the ‘Floating Coffins’ were horrible Crammed below the decks of the ship Storms, Pirate Raids, and Revolts by Captives Disease -> the biggest threat Suicide (Slaves may attempt to jump and drown) Out of the estimated 11 million African slaves who were brought to the Americas, around 2 million probably died during the journey by ship. Middle Passage - The journey from Africa to the Americas Sometimes slaves were thrown overboard for revolting or to make more room. How could humans do this to other humans?

12 S5: Effects of Global Contact
Through exploration in the 1500 and 1600s, Europe becomes a dominant world power. Brought major changes to Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

13 Effects of Global Contact
The Columbian Exchange Global transfer of goods and ideas that began with Columbus’ discovery of the New World A Commercial Revolution International Trade Expands Mercantilism Arises The idea that countries should seek to increase their wealth by establishing overseas colonies

14 Quick Review of Ch. 15 After Columbus discovers the Americas, many Spanish Conquistadors travel to this New World. What is the impact of their actions? How would you describe relations between different European powers in North America? Can you explain the triangular trade system that developed across the Atlantic Ocean? What are some of the effects of global contact brought about by European exploration?
