He is Holy/We Should Be Holy
Leviticus 19:3-8
2
24 “Do not make yourselves unclean by any of these
things, for by all these the nations I am driving out before you have become unclean, 25 and the land became unclean, so that I punished its iniquity, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. 26 But you shall keep my statutes and my rules and do none of these abominations, either the native or the stranger who sojourns among you 27 (for the people of the land, who were before you, did all of these abominations, so that the land became unclean), God.”
3
28 lest the land vomit you out when you make it unclean, as it vomited out the nation that was before you. 29 For everyone who does any of these abominations, the persons who do them shall be cut off from among their people. 30 So keep my charge never to practice any of these abominable customs that were practiced before you, and never to make yourselves unclean by them: I am the LORD your God.” (Leviticus 18:24-30)
4
3 Every one of you shall revere his mother and his
father, and you shall keep my Sabbaths: I am the LORD your God. 4 Do not turn to idols or make for yourselves any gods of cast metal: I am the LORD your God. 5 “When you offer a sacrifice of peace offerings to the LORD, you shall offer it so that you may be accepted. 6 It shall be eaten the same day you offer it or on the day after, and anything left over until the third day shall be burned up with fire. 7 If it is eaten at all on the third day, it is tainted; it will not be accepted,
5
8 and everyone who eats it shall bear his iniquity, because he has profaned what is holy to the LORD, and that person shall be cut off from his people. (Leviticus 19:3-8)
6
1. Revere…the Lord! (3-4) “Revere your mother and father.”
“Revere” means “to fear.” (deep respect) “Revere” does not mean compliance to rules but honoring your parents through your individual actions.
7
1. Revere…the Lord! (3-4) Parents must teach their children to honor and revere them. Not by words alone Loving correction Consistent faithfulness that is not flawless but honest.
8
1. Revere…the Lord! (3-4) “Revere your mother and father” as an adult
Making decisions that still bring honor to your parents. Looking after and taking care of their needs.
9
1. Revere…the Lord! (3-4) “Revere our neighbors”
Romans 12:10 “Love one another with brotherly affection. OUTDO one another in showing HONOR.”
10
1. Revere…the Lord! (3-4) “Keep the Sabbath.” Sabbath means “to rest.”
Romans 14:5-6
11
5 One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. (Romans 14:5-6)
12
1. Revere…the Lord! (3-4) “Keep the Sabbath.”
It means more than rest but also focusing on worship, thanksgiving, and dependence upon God. Take a rest in your work week. Make efforts to distinct the day from the rest of your work week.
13
1. Revere…the Lord! (3-4) “Do not turn to idols.”
Misguided application of trust and praise.
14
2. Acceptable Vows (5-8) Three occasions for peace offerings
Thanksgiving Vow Freewill Peace offering permitted the one making the sacrifice the opportunity to eat the meat.
15
2. Acceptable Vows (5-8) Twofold Purpose of text.
God expects obedience to His commands which signifies their understanding of the holiness of God. Vows that are not followed up with obedience are guilty of sin.
16
2. Acceptable Vows (5-8) Do not be hasty in making vows to God if you do not have the surrender to follow through. Grace abounds when we do not follow through in a vow.
17
Application God has called us to be set apart from our culture.
How can you take one step of obedience today that will bring you further along in your journey of holiness (revering parents, sabbath, vows)? Grace, grace, and more grace abounds.
