5. OPEN SKIES -SUBJECT OPTIONS
Students submit their 4 preferences.
Preference 1 must be their language choice
The subject blocks will be generated based on their choices.
In the event that a small number of students do not get all their 4 preferences, a meeting will be held with the student to discuss another subject choice.
Closing Date is the 5th April 2019.

What subjects will bring them the best grades?
What is my daughter interested in doing when she leaves school?
What subjects are essential for that area?
What subjects would be helpful or useful for that area?
What subjects should I take outside of school?

7. Where to get information on The Subjects
Talk to the teachers of the subject and Guidance Counsellor
Look at the curriculum on the subject
Look at the past exam papers on the subject
Talk to students who are doing/have done the subject

Aptitude – DAT, Pre Results
Future Plans – Career and/or College
If your daughter knows what he would like to do, check entry requirements -
If not, remember to keep options open

Entry to third level –
College and Course Requirements
Points – 6 best subjects (Honours Maths Bonus)
Interview, Portfolio, Assessment

10. College Requirements
Vary from one Higher Educational Institute to another
Irish, English & Maths are required for entry into most third level colleges
The National Universities of Ireland (NUIM, NUIG, UCC, UCD, RCSI, St. Angela’s College) require a foreign language for most courses – unless exempt.

11. Exceptions
Trinity College, University of Limerick and DCU require English and another language
The Institutes of Technology do not require a language unless the course involves the study of a language

12. College Requirements Additional Requirements depend on the course.
Certain subjects are required while others are desirable
e.g. Primary Teaching – Grade Highe 6 in Irish
A Business subject is not required for entry into Business related courses, however it would serve as an excellent foundation to many courses.
A Science subject is required for entry into a broad range of courses including Engineering, Medical, Science, Technology or Paramedical (Radiography, Physiotherapy, Dietician, Pharmacy).

14. Specific Subjects
Human Nutrition at DIT, Veterinary at UCD and Pharmacy at all colleges require Chemistry at Higher H5 or better.
Medicine at UCC require Higher H4 in a Chemistry Subject (+HPAT)
Medicine in Trinity requires 1H3 + 1H4 In two laboratory-based science subjects + HPAT

16. Points Calculated on the six highest grades in the Leaving Cert
The points obtained in Higher Level papers are higher than those obtained in Ordinary Level papers.
The points for College courses change each year and depend on the level of interest & the number of places in each course

17. Other Options Post Leaving Cert (PLC) courses
General rule is to pass five subjects in the Leaving Certificate
Remember to check each individual course for minimum entry requirements
Training -
Apprenticeship – Solas
Gardai
Army, Navy
Subjects that are relevant to the apprenticeship will be useful if considering a career in that area
Job / employment
