A. Who: E. Germans tried to escape to the west B. Why: Want western freedoms C. Reaction: E. Germany closes the border with W. Germany and begin building a wall in Berlin, troops ordered to shoot any who try to defect

A. Who: Hungarians demand more rights, B. Why: Khrushchev’s 1956 De-Stalinzation plan causes Imre Nagy to form a new government with free elections – Hungarian uprising begins C. Result: Soviets send in tanks and troops to end the movement III. Prague Spring - Czechoslovakia, 1968 A. Who/Why: Czech writers strike for more freedom, causing Czech leader Alexander Dubček to loosen some hard-line rules B. Result: People start writing about new ideas during the “Prague Spring”, causing the Soviet army to invade CZ and crush the movement
