What is Early Literacy? Early Literacy is everything children know about reading and writing before they actually learn to read and write. Early literacy skills begin to develop in the first five years of life. Experiences with books and language lay the foundation for success in learning to read. Children prepare to read long before they enter school.

Concepts of Print Concepts of Print includes book knowledge, directionality (reading from left to right), print awareness, and environmental print, distinctions between letters and words and upper and lowercase letters. Teachers should model concepts of print each time a book is introduced.

What is Oral Language? Oral Language is the foundation of literacy!
Children need to learn new words and learn about the structure of language through talking with their peers and adults. Any verbal activity performed with children is an example of oral language.

Phonological Awareness is the conscious attention to the sounds of written language. It only involves sounds (alliteration, rhyming, syllables, etc. no written language).
