1 Chapter 1 What is History

2 What is History? History is an account of past events of a group of people arranged chronologically. Where do you get the information from? Letters, documents (laws, diaries, newspapers, stories) written accounts

3 Primary/ Secondary Eyewitness accounts- Things that we see.
Primary sources-Sources that are written by the very people who make the events of history happen. Secondary sources-sometimes may not be accurate (forged), or may be the view of the writer.

4 Subjective/Objective
Subjective- Rely on our feelings instead of the facts. Objective- To try very hard to use facts (trying to look at both sides)

5 Why is it that we read history?
So we know how we got here To compare what life was like in the past Knowing our ancestors will give us a sense of belonging. Helps to learn from past mistakes Learning about other people/places will help us understand our neighbors better.

6 How did we learn about the Hawaiians history…
It was through dance, stories, chants, legends. ( oral traditions) Petroglyphs

7 History is like a science
There are geologists-study rocks, volcanoes Biologists-study plants and animals Anthropologists-to help out in the study of the earth and its people (These groups studied the early Hawaiians)
