Directional Terms Distal- away from point of attachment to the trunk
Proximal- Near the point of attachment to the trunk Medial- Middle or near the medial lane of the body Lateral- To the side Inferior- Below another structure Superior- Above another structure Anterior- The front side of the body Posterior- The back side of the body

Movement Terms Flexion- Decreasing angle at a joint
Extension- Increasing angle at a joint Abduction- Movement away from midline Adduction- Movement towards the midline Pronation- Turning palms down Supination- Turning palms up Elevation- Raising shoulders/scapula Depression- Lowering shoulders/scapula Protraction- Action of bringing scapula away from midline Retraction- Action of bringing scapula towards midline Plantarflexion-Action of increasing angle at ankle (on toes) Dorsiflexion- Action of decreasing angle at ankle (on heels)

Eversion- Bringing heels away from midline Horizontal Adduction- Movement in the transverse plane toward midline Horizontal Abduction- Movement in transverse plane away from midline
