Develop a Family Plan: Identify & protect from home hazards Learn & practice emergency procedures Establish (2) evacuation routes out of your home Establish (2) safe meeting spots for family members to gather Establish out-of-province contact Gather necessary supplies

7 Team Leadership Responsibilities:
Promotes involvement & recruits new neighbours Encourages, monitors & assists Unit Leaders in completing their plans & activities Provides overall leadership & team coordination Coordinates & prioritizes issues addressed by response units

Leadership & organizational skills Trusted & accepted by neighbours Able to delegate, facilitate & make decisions Good interpersonal & communication skills Availability

9 First Aid Unit Responsibilities:
Selects a suitable location as a first aid station Plans (in advance) for neighbours who may require special care Conducts triage of those injured Provides on-site first aid care & emotional support to injured neighbours (within limits) Refers to outside medical assistance

10 First Aid Unit Desired Characteristics:
First Aid training or willingness to obtain first aid skills Safety conscious Calm & caring Background in counselling Good interpersonal & communications skills

11 Utilities & Fire Suppression Unit
Responsibilities: Utilizes info from Damage Assessment Unit Reduces hazards from fire & damaged utilities Shuts off gas meters, electricity, & water, if necessary Cordons off hazardous areas

12 Utilities & Fire Suppression Unit
Desired Characteristics: Basic knowledge of utilities & their shut-offs Familiarity with building construction Physical strength and good health Organized & safety conscious

13 Light Urban Search & Rescue Unit
Responsibilities: Utilizes Damage Assessment info to: access/stabilize structures locate missing neighbours rescue trapped & injured transport injured to safety Uses safe & effective rescue techniques Marks all searched areas with X

14 Light Urban Search & Rescue Unit
Desired Characteristics: Search & Rescue experience or training Knowledge of building construction Knowledge of utilities Physical strength & good health Organized & safety conscious Ability to assess situation & make decisions

15 Communications & Transportation Unit
Responsibilities: Liaises closely with Team Leader Provides a communication link between n’hood response units Provides a communication link between n’hood team & municipality & outside resources Provides transportation services, as needed

16 Communications & Transportation Unit
Desired Characteristics: Good listening skills & verbal skills Clear handwriting Amateur radio licence & equipment (ideal) Ability to speak slowly, clearly & distinctly Valid driver’s license & larger vehicle

17 Shelter & Care Giving Unit
Responsibilities: Provides a safe, clean environment for neighbours to gather Provides care for the young, frail & special needs (may include pet care) Offers warmth, emotional support, nourishment and sanitary needs Provides temporary food & shelter for neighbours unable to return to their homes

Desired Characteristics: Parenting skills Strong interpersonal skills Child care experience Home care experience Good hosting skills Emergency Social Services training

19 Damage Assessment Unit
Responsibilities: One of initial response activities Conducts a rapid & accurate preliminary assessment of damage, hazards, safe & unsafe areas in the n’hood Reports findings to N’hood Team Leader Provides ongoing, updated surveys of damage N’hood sustains

Desired Characteristics: Good knowledge of building construction Organized & safety conscious Able to communicate clearly & make decisions

21 N’hood Team Setup Inventory skills & resources of neighbours - appoint to response units Complete individual/family preparedness Prepare map & layout of n’hood Identify known hazards as well as local resources Identify Team assembly point (AP) Establish communication methods Identify response unit gathering points Stockpile & locate supplies Obtain additional training & exercises
