Emancipation Proclamation
Lincoln believed he could save the Union by broadening his goals. He decided to emancipate, or free, enslaved African Americans living in the Confederacy.

Reasons to Emancipate More than 3 million slaves working for Confederacy. Major impact on war effort (nurses, cooks, laborers) Emancipation would weaken Confederacy Concerned about timing, Lincoln waited for Union victory to announce his proclamation.

Battle of Shiloh Abraham Lincoln appoints Ulysses S. Grant as General.
Known as a tough, no-nonsense soldier. Northern victory in bloody two day battle. North loses 13,000 troops. South loses 10, 000 troops.
