Reconstituting Enzymes for Direct Electron Transfer through Surface Initiated Polymerization of Conjugated Polymers Jason Locklin, Department of Chemistry and Faculty of Engineering, University of Georgia We have recently reported the surface-initiated polymerization conjugated polymers using a novel polymerization method of surface-initiated Kumada-type catalyst transfer polycondensation. Both substituted and unsubstituted poly(thiophenes) and poly(p-phenylenes) have been synthesized from aromatic bromide monolayers on gold and ITO using this method. Schematic of the surface initiated polymerization process End-functionalization with ferrocene containing Grignard Fc/Fc+ Varying the polymerization conditions allows for control over thickness, molecular weight, and density of the conducting polymer wires The controlled polymerization allows end-functionalization of the conducting polymer brushes with different chemical moieties polythiophene
