Mathematicians at Work: A Look Inside C-FBISD
I am Pam Smith, Director of Mathematics Pk-8 and Tanya Garvey, Director of High School Mathematics. Dr. Burns, Members of the Board, CFB Employees, parents and community members it is indeed a pleasure to take you on a little journey that showcases the students in C-FBISD as they work toward becoming mathematicians. In order to prepare students for life in the twenty-first century, the focus on education needs to be on learning to learn, create, innovate, communicate, and discern. While it is extremely important to get correct answers in mathematics, the process is just as important.

The goal of the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD is high achievement for all students.
Guiding Objective 1: Continuously improve instructional practice Guiding Objective 2: Continuously improve the learning environment Guiding Objective 3: Continuously improve operational effectiveness Guiding Objective 4: Continuously improve community support
3
Students will select appropriate tools such as real objects, manipulatives, algorithms, paper and pencil, and technology and techniques such as mental math, estimation, number sense, and generalization and abstraction to solve problems.
4
Students will effectively communicate mathematical ideas, reasoning, and their implications using multiple representations such as symbols, diagrams, graphs, computer programs, and language.

Five Major Reasons That Talk is Critical to Teaching and Learning
Talk can reveal understanding and misunderstandings. Talk supports robust learning by boosting memory. Talk supports deeper reasoning. Talk supports language development. Talk supports development of social skills.

Teacher Support Coaching Math Mondays
Professional Learning Communities Math Mondays In order for teachers to facilitate robust learning habits in their students they need to practice these learning habits themselves. We offer several venues for teacher support: Coaching…approximately 175 teachers are getting one on one coaching this year. The coaching model gives the individual teacher the opportunity plan/study the lesson with a coach, co-teach, and then debrief the lesson and look for evidence of student learning. Coaches also help teachers learn the importance of reflection and refinement in the coach’s practice as well as the teacher’s. All teachers of mathematics are involved in Professional Learning Communities. You will find a group of teachers studying the unit, lesson, a particular concept, etc. deeply. They may bring in examples of actual student work and discuss the strategies being used, the misconceptions students may still have and establishing focused tutoring. Often you will find teachers work actual mathematics and discuss the actual teachers moves that need to be in place to facilitate student learning. Math Mondays:

Teacher Support Content Knowledge
Through the use federal funds we have been able to offer content training for teachers in all Grade levels K-Algebra II. Teachers requested these trainings in order to develop learning behaviors such as how to build effective anchor charts, how to ask higher level questions, differentiation, effective modeling, mathematical discourse and collaboration with others. You will find these workshops to be very hands on, see teachers practicing their teacher moves and getting feedback and just learning to learn. They truly experience what is it like to be a learner again!
