GEM Presentation GEM Team USDA-ARS NCRPIS GEM December 9, 2003 Now, I am going to talk about GEM yield trial data. Germplasm Enhancement of Maize

GEM Yield Trial Summary
Experiments: 29. Replications: 191. Plots: 9000. Private cooperators’ portion: 79.5%. GEM team portion: 20.5%. This year, there were 29 experiments, including 191 replications and about 9000 yield trial plots. Among them, the GEM private cooperators conducted around 80% of these plots and GEM team did 20%.

GEM Yield Trial Summary
Handouts: A long format with GEM 2003 yield trial plans and top 20 entries for each experiment and a short format summaries. Statistical Parameters: mean, CV, F-value, and LSD Number of lines outperformed the check means: 63 (in 12 experiments) GEM yield trial data – We have 2 handouts for everybody this year, one is a long format with GEM 2003 yield trial plans and top 20 entries for each experiment; and a short format summaries. As usual, GEM data were collected, analyzed, and reported with the following statistical parameters, such as means, CVs F-values, and LSDs. There were 63 S2 lines that outperformed the check means in 12 experiments. The complete yield trial data will be available next January on GEM web site.

Here is a list of the numbers of the GEM S2 lines that outperformed the check means in the experiments. For UR05071:S0415, there were 14 entries that outperformed the check mean. For NEI9004:S2818, there were 12, etc.

Special Thanks to the Companies That Conducted Yield Trial In-Kind Supports:
AgReliant Genetics, LLC Beck’s Superior Hybrids, Inc. Benson Seed Research, LLC FFR Cooperative Garst Seed Company Golden Harvest Seeds, Inc. Hoegemeyer Hybrids, Inc. Holden’s Foundation Seed, LLC Illinois Foundation Seeds, Inc. Monsanto Company Mycogen Seeds National Starch & Chemical Co. NC+ Hybrids PAU Seeds, Inc. Pioneer Hi-Bred Int., Inc. Schillinger Seeds SEEDirect There were 17 companies that provided the in-kind supports to conduct the yield trials. Due to the time limitation, I won’t mention each of them, but I have to mention that we really appreciate their in-kind support. Without their support, we can do nothing.

GEM Data Format Data communication has been improved
Data communication: Have both ENTRY NUMBERS and PEDIGREES Data Format: Raw data are required with our database (PRISM) Additional information for us: Unusual field condition Stress, wind, pests or hail incidents Cautioning concerns about data interpretation Through years, I have seen a trend of improvement for the data communication. As a result, I have spent less and less time at data clean-up and re-organization. I really appreciate that. To insure the data accuracy, I would like to receive the data with both entry numbers and pedigrees. Since we are using the PRISM database to manage our data, we have to have raw data for the PRISM, such as stand count, in stead of the percentage of the stand count; and plot size, in stead of the yield as bushels per acre. We also appreciate additional information about the unusual field condition, the damage of stress, wind, pests or hail incidents, and cautioning concerns about the data interpretation. That’s all for my report. Thank you for your time. Other GEM team members will present the recommendations.
