Key words: accuracy, terminology, coherent, cogent, sophisticated, analysis, understanding, embedded quotation, topic sentence, connective, critical The voice of Celie is used by Walker to represent the women during the 1900s… The epistolary layout of the book means that we are only open to Celie’s point of view throughout the novel. This form is extremely helpful, as the audience are made to comprehend the events that occurred in Celie’s life and gain an understanding of her thoughts and feelings toward the situation also giving a feeling of empathy . ‘When I hurt I cry’ and ‘my mamma dead’ although her language has minimum description, the harshness and emptiness could bring emphasis to her emotive state – as well as correspond to her feelings as she starts to feel no emotions anymore due to all the hurst she has felt in the past. Key words: accuracy, terminology, coherent, cogent, sophisticated, analysis, understanding, embedded quotation, topic sentence, connective, critical The use of the vernacular and phonetic spelling ‘Naw I ain’t gonna’ gives the reader a sense of realism of the times thhat Celie may have grown up in r this may also show Celie is uneducated. Celie uses a lot of euphemisms such as ‘thing’ to describe certain words this can show that Celie childish as she doesn’t use the proper terminology to describe ‘adult’ words. Walker may have done this to emphasize Celie’s youth at the point where her innocence was taken away which shows that she was not ready when her innocence was taken away from her. Key words: accuracy, terminology, coherent, cogent, sophisticated, analysis, understanding, embedded quotation, topic sentence, connective, critical Walker relays Celie’s story to us in the form of an epistolary novel, producing a personal and truthful account of her life giving a deeper insight into her thoughts as she is writing after these events have taken place, revealing her conscious interpretation; these letters are addressed to God as she has no one else to tell, already depicting the loneliness of her situation, this in itself creates empathy. The whole form of letters is perhaps symbolic of her silence: in not being able to ‘tell nobody but God’ about her father’s and in society as a young black woman, she is ‘choked’ by her traumatic childhood and by the segregation of sexism of the 1900s, unable to really develop her own voice she writes – a silence for of communication – and to the only person she believes will listen: God.
