6 Why Jamestown The English were not the first to settle in the new world The Spanish and French had settle in Florida The English were afraid of the Spanish because of settlements already in Florida, and defeat of the French at Fort Caroline. The Colonists want to be in an area where they could bring provisions ashore with ease, and to better receive the trade of all the countries.

7 The English thought the bay would be a great area if a an enemy approach they could easily leave.

8 Struggles of Jamestown
After landing the colony settlers spent most their time in vain looking for gold After a month in the new world the colonists only had made shelters, they had not started farming The colony traded with the Powhatan Indians for food.

9 John Smith Captain John Smith helped the colony from dissolving
He had the motto “He who does not work will not eat” He required each colonist to spend at least four hours a day farming The colony survived due to his leadership.

10 John Smith had to go back to England because of injury/gunpowder explosion
After his departure the colonists faced more hardships A boat load of supplies and new settlers sank before reaching the hungry settlers.

11 “Starving Time” The winter of 1609 was called the starving time
60 of the 214 settlers survived the winter Famine, disease and constant war took a toll on the colony’s population One colonist even took to cannibalism, eating his own wife

12 Jamestown fails? Settlers decided after John Smith left that they could no longer handle it. They decided to pack up what was left and head back to England before they all died. But…….

13 Decline of Jamestown Despite the introduction of tobacco cultivation, the colony was a failure as a financial venture. About 200,000 pounds (currency) were lost among the investors. Virginia became a royal colony, the first in America to be ruled by the Crown and in 1619 it became the first colony to have an elected assembly, better known as the House of Burgesses.
