ADHD Brain disorder marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity One of the most common neuro-development mental disorders of childhood. Often leads into adulthood. Often diagnosed at a young age.

Statistics 11% of children are diagnosed with ADHD.
Half of all children diagnosed will continue to have symptoms into adulthood. Boys are 3 times more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD. 5% of adults have ADHD. Affects all races, IQ levels, and socio-economic backgrounds.

Myths about ADHD ADHD is the result of bad parenting.
Children who take ADHD medication are more likely to abuse drugs when they are adults. People with ADHD are stupid or lazy. ADHD only affects boys. Children with ADHD eventually outgrow it. ADHD isn’t a true medical disorder.

Symptoms and Signs Diagnosing is complex.
Issue must be present in multiple areas and be persistent, extreme, and pervasive. Trouble focusing on simple tasks. Have trouble getting along with others. Talk too much and at inappropriate times. Misplaces things.

How does ADHD affect the body?
The brain chemical “dopamine”, is affected. Dopamine carries signals between nerves in the brain. Dopamine levels of a person with ADHD are usually lower. Sometimes, there is a problem with the levels of proteins that carry the dopamine. Prescribed medications work by blocking the dopamine.

ADHD can be passed down from parents
ADHD can be passed down from parents. If a parent has ADHD, a child has more than 50% chance of having it.

Treatment for ADHD Medication
Therapy, including behavior modification. Combination of medication and therapy.

Diagnose Check list filled out by parents and teachers
The symptoms will tell the doctor if you have ADHD. Doctor will discuss the option of medication.

Behavior or Conduct Problems
Children usually get angry around adults and respond aggressively. Children can also get disrespectful to people with authority (teachers, police officers, and parents) Often get angry and want to hurt someone who they feel has hurt them or caused problems for them. These behaviors that are being shown in people with ADHD can often lead to breaking the law and being jailed. Often children will run away from home. Patients can also be aggressive in a way that causes harm such as bullying, fighting, lying, stealing, and damaging others property.

Social problems Difficulty making friends or fitting in.
Causes child to do things to try to fit in or be “cool” like drugs. Usually do not share their feelings with people.
