1 STS.035: Semester Installation Project Idea Generation
Nicole Kogan

2 Background Centerbeam is the epitome of CAVS and Kepes’ vision
Interdisciplinary collaboration (scientists, artists, and engineers working together) Especially relevant today, as boundaries between different disciplines become increasingly blurred Elements from across different media meant to engage all human senses With the development of new technologies in the modern era, opportunity exists to literally build upon this facet; contributes to performative art Technology can give new ways to play with scale Spectator participation

3 Idea 1: Timeline Principal goal: to trace visitors through CAVS, with Centerbeam acting as metonymy Centerbeam structure naturally lends itself to a timeline  use it as the root of a display on CAVS history, with nodes branching off to different [chronologically-organized] elements Allows us to play with a different sort of scale, given limitation of space: time “A root system turned on its side…” (Elizabeth Goldring)

4 How do I envision this? Mix between organic materials (e.g. rope, steam, water, helium) and technology (e.g. lasers, neon, holography) Centerbeam is the root of the timeline structure, with branches connected to boxes by rope Each box represents 1 CAVS milestone or 1 CAVS fellow or 1 CAVS project, conveyed to the observer in a medium used by Centerbeam

5 Idea 2: “An aqueduct into the 21st century…” (Martin Schneckenburger)
Principal goal: to directly engage gallery visitors with Centerbeam through modern technological advances Inspiration: The Borderline Mural Project Use augmented reality (AR) overlayed on Centerbeam’s structure to highlight its different components Allows us to play with the piece’s scale, given that most of the art installation is contained in a virtual realm

7 How do I envision this? Mix modern technology with what was considered “cutting edge” during the time of Centerbeam Have gallery visitors download an application or scan QR codes situated on a Centerbeam-resembling base, which then allows them to interact with the piece One of these user-interactive elements will be a voice-over explaining the art piece and Centerbeam in the context of CAVS
