Why is it important?

4 Definition A ratio is a comparison of two numbers.

5 (for every two yellow there are five orange.)
This compares Part to Part. This compares Part to Whole. 2 yellow to 5 orange 2:5 (for every two yellow there are five orange.) A ratio can be written in different ways.

7 Sample Problem: A quart of milk can feed either 6 cats or 10 kittens
Sample Problem: A quart of milk can feed either 6 cats or 10 kittens.  Suppose there are 3 quarts of milk and 15 cats.   After all the cats are all fed, how many kittens can be fed with the leftover milk?

8 1 qt milk: 6 cats. 1 qt milk: 10 kittens We have:. 3 quarts of milk
1 qt milk: 6 cats qt milk: 10 kittens  We have: 3 quarts of milk 15 cats
